Housatonic bridge to be closed for two days

GREAT BARRINGTON — The Park Street bridge in Housatonic will be temporarily closed for two days so workers can remove a temporary span installed for ongoing bridge work.

The state Department of Transportation said it will close the Route 183 bridge between 6 a.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Friday.

MassDOT said message boards showing detours will be posted on Route 7, Route 102 and Route 183 in Great Barrington and Stockbridge, and the work schedule is subject to change without notice based on weather conditions.

Work to the 47-year-old bridge ran into trouble last spring when workers found more deterioration in its concrete beams than they had expected.

And several closures snagged commutes through the well-used artery in Housatonic village.

MassDOT is replacing the bridge's superstructure and deck, as well as adding new railings and sidewalks.

The 108-foot span over the Housatonic River was deemed structurally deficient after a 2015 state inspection rated its superstructure as "critical condition."

From the beginning, the agency said the work would have to be done in phases unless the town was willing to close the bridge and reroute traffic for a sustained period.
