Incoming Gov. Charlie Baker to visit Berkshires on Saturday

PITTSFIELD >> Incoming Gov. Charlie Baker will make his first official visit to the Berkshires this weekend, just two days after his inauguration.

Baker will visit the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams and the Soldier On veterans facility in Pittsfield on Saturday with incoming Lieutenant Gov. Karyn Polito.

He is scheduled to visit Mass MoCA at 11 a.m. and Soldier On's facility on West Housatonic Street at 1 p.m.

Baker and Polito are participating in a number of public "Spotlight on Excellence" events across the state from Wednesday through Saturday as part of the 2015 Inaugural Celebration.

Spotlight on Excellence events revisit several locations that Baker visited during his campaign to showcase the venue's innovative solutions to complex issues that were highlighted in the campaign such as jobs, schools and communities.

They are intended to highlight Baker's pledge to boost job creation, innovate schools and strengthen communities across the state.

"Massachusetts is home to great people who work hard everyday to make our commonwealth a better place and our administration wants to celebrate these folks and work to replicate their success across the commonwealth," Baker said in a statement.

The visits to Mass MoCA and Soldier On are the only two events in the tour that are scheduled to take place in Western Massachusetts. Baker and Polito are expected to give brief remarks at Mass MoCA after touring the facility, and hold roundtable and tour at Soldier On.

The two venues were chosen to be on the tour to highlight the work they have done with the arts and with military veterans issue

On Wednesday, Baker and Polito will visit Robert Frost Middle School in Lawrence at 12:30 p.m.

The inauguration ceremony will be held at noon on Thursday at the Statehouse. Following the ceremony, Baker and Polito will visit the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative at the Kroc Community Center in Boston at 2:30 p.m. Baker and Polito will then hold their "Let's Be Great" inaugural celebration in Boston at 8 p.m.

On Friday, Baker and Polito visit Blackstone Valley Vocational Technical School in Upton at 11:15 a.m., and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester at 1:15 p.m.

Gov. Deval Patrick also included the Berkshires in his statewide inaugural tour, visiting the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield in January 2007.
