James Ryan, Steve Flint win Worthington Cup

WORTHINGTON — James Ryan and partner Steve Flint combined for their second consecutive 2-under par 68 to walk away with the men's championship by three shots in the Worthington Cup at the Links at Worthington on Sunday.

Ryan, a member at the Links, and Flint led by three shots after Saturday's opening round and never gave up the lead in finishing ahead of the pairing of Jeff Edwards and Curtis Marion. Edwards and Marion did take low net honors with a 128 total for 36 holes.

Scott Preston and Fred Goerlach had Sunday's best round, shooting a 3-under 67 to finish next at 140.

Eight shots behind the champions were two teams — Aidan Brownlie and Andrew Ryan (71-73) along with Peter and Chris Baran (73-71). Brownlie teamed earlier this summer with James Ryan, his uncle, to win the Stockbridge Trophy at Stockbridge Golf Club.

Finishing second in the net division with 128 totals were two other teams — Peter Donatelli and Bill Spitzer, along with Steve Magargal and Kevin Henderson.

In the women's division, Gwen Shea and Pam McLean took low gross honors with a 36-hole total of 187, while Mari Hall and Chris Closek finished with a low net score of 132.

Editor's note: a prior version of this story incorrectly referred to Peter Baran as superintendent at Wyantenuck. Peter Bacon  is the superintendent at Wyantenuck.
