Lanesborough homeowners to see property tax spike

LANESBOROUGH — The average singe-family homeowner can expect a $351 spike in property taxes, spurred by an expanded regional school district and stagnant growth.

Town officials recently announced the fiscal 2019 real estate tax rate is jumping from $21.40 per $1,000 of assessed value in fiscal 2018 to $22.63 in the current fiscal year. The $1.23 increase equates to a $350.99 higher tax bill for the average single-family home assessed by the town at $225,438, according to a town assessor, Kelly Tolisano.

"I want to make clear, not everybody's taxes are going up $350," Tolisano told the Select Board at their last meeting.

In all, Lanesborough needs to raise $8.9 million in residential and commercial property tax revenue toward funding an overall $11.3 million municipal budget through June 30. The new fiscal year began July 1.

Tolisano noted that nearly 83 percent of taxable property in town is residential.

One key factor in home and business owners facing higher property taxes, roughly 30 cents of the tax rate hike is attributed to Lanesborough's assessment to the newly expanded Mount Greylock Regional School District, going from $5,641,000 to $5,753,000, according to Town Manager Kelli Robbins

The $112,000 difference approved at the annual town meeting in June covers the shortfall of the town no longer receiving tuition money from New Ashford who send children to Lanesborough Elementary School. The tuition now goes directly to Mount Greylock, which became responsible for both Lanesborough and Williamstown elementary schools on July 1. Both towns agreed a year ago to form a single prekindergarten through Grade 12 district, previous just a Grade 7-12 school system.

The town wasn't able to spread the burden of a tax increase because new growth in fiscal 2019 amounted to only $66,695, Tolisano said.

"We didn't have much new growth [for fiscal 2018,] either," she added.
