Lenox: Lenox High names senior scholars


LENOX — Lenox Memorial Middle and High School Principal Michael Knybel has named Magdalena "Maggie" Sorrentino as valedictorian and Julie Pehlert as salutatorian of the Class of 2019. Graduation exercises will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Tanglewood.

Sorrentino, daughter of Mary and Samuel Sorrentino of Lee, is a high honors student, president of the National Honor Society and president of the Lenox Student Council. She is a recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award as well as the Harvard Book Award.

She is a captain of three varsity sports, a peer mentor, a National Art Honor Society member, and a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Student Ambassador.

Next year, Sorrentino plans to pursue a degree in elementary education with a double minor in Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity and Special Education at the University of Vermont.

Pehlert, daughter of Craig and Melissa Pehlert of Lenox, is vice president of the High School Student Council, a high honors student, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the National Art Honor Society.

She is a high school peer mentor, peer tutor and participated in 1Berkshire's Youth Leadership Program.

Pehlert received the Cornell University Book Award which is given to an outstanding junior who demonstrates excellence in both academic and non-academic areas. She also received the Summa Cum Laude Award on the National Latin Exam, the English Literary Analysis Book Award, and outstanding academic achievement awards in mathematics, Spanish and Latin.

Pehlert is a four-year member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, serving as basketball captain her senior year. She was selected to both the All-Berkshire South and All-Western Mass. soccer teams during her junior and senior years.

In the fall, she will attend the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to pursue a degree in nursing.
