Letter: A rare candidate for a rare occasion

To the editor

As a lifelong resident of North Adams, I have seen the city flourish in good times and suffer as industries departed. We have the rare occasion to elect a mayor who is not an incumbent for the first time in 34 years. I am using this opportunity to vote for Tom Bernard because I think he possesses the leadership qualities and characteristics necessary to successfully keep North Adams moving forward.

Tom grew up through the public school system as a classmate of my children. As the child of educators, Tom understands the critical role that teachers play in shaping young minds, but he also recognizes the importance and value of a quality education. During his time working at MCLA under the tutelage of President Mary Grant, Tom was able to hone his leadership skills — specifically in organizational management, capital budgeting and fundraising, strategic planning, government and community relations, and communications. I am confident that he has what it takes to be our next mayor of North Adams, so I encourage you to join me in voting for Tom Bernard for mayor on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Hulda Hardman Jowett,

North Adams
