Letter: Beacon must publicize return of Met Opera
To the editor:
Opera has returned to the Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield. After the sale of the theater, the Metropolitan Opera in HD performances were suddenly cancelled without notice.
Now, just as suddenly, they have returned. Saturday, I was one of 11 people who attended a fantastic performance of Wagner's "Die Walkure." It was one of the best I've ever seen of that opera and I was sad that so few people knew about it. It wasn't announced anywhere. I encouraged the staff to send out press releases!
There is only one more opera HD this season, "The Dialogues of Carmelites," on May 11, but they have announced a great series of 10 operas beginning in October for next season. I would like to suggest that all who are interested, contact the theater and let them know of their interest and also to suggest they announce it so there will be more than 11 in the audience next time.
To sit in a very comfortable seat with a big screen and great sound, at a live performance from the Metropolitan for $25 is a great bargain when you consider that a ticket close to the front at the Met would be $200 or $300 or more.
