Letter: Berkshire County needs full-fledged sports facility

To the Editor:

In response to two recent articles in The Eagle, "Shopping malls are dying" and "Harden brothers figuring it out," I would like to reiterate the need for a decent space for figure skaters in central and southern Berkshire County. The rink at the Boys & Girls Club is crumbling, in desperate need of an upgrade and lacking a proper dehumidifier to keep the dampness out.

Today's skaters, as the Harden boys reveal, want a place where they can concentrate on their skills, not avoid splintering side boards, drips from a rusty ceiling and hideous paint. It's no wonder that there aren't more parents bringing their children to this location which resides in the distant past. The Boys & Girls Club has spent a great amount of funding on their basketball court and former Lighthouse, but the rink is clearly not a priority.

The article about the malls suggests the Berkshire Mall could be an opportunity for a state-of-the-art facility for ice sports, indoor soccer, a climbing gym, among others. And there is still lots of space for restaurants, hotel and other living spaces. I envision a training area which would draw Olympic hopefuls and competitions for our population to be proud of — all year long.

Here's hoping the new year will bring good news to the sports-minded members of the Berkshire community.

Mary Talbot,
