Letter: Column on Tracer brought memories, tears

To the editor:

So many heartfelt thanks to Ruth Bass for her beautiful tribute to her dog Tracer ("On Thanksgiving, 'thank you' carries more meaning," column, Nov. 25).

It brought back so many memories and tears thinking of my steadfast black lab, Blackie. He was best friends with both me and my other best friend, my husband David.

Blackie was a sweet and gentle soul and he is very much missed, as is my beloved David. When David died at home in bed, Blackie never stopped sniffing the bed looking for him. And as sometimes happens with steadfast partners, Blackie passed a few weeks later. Of course he was 14 years old, but one likes to think he died of a broken heart.

Like Ruth, for a while I "Shirley Valentined," but I had to stem the loneliness and I found my little Havanese, Rakki. He is more of a child than a best friend but he is playful and lovable and a good companion.

Thank you for your column, Ruth, reminding me that some of us love dogs as much as we love people.

Susan Zuckerman,
