Letter: Concerns about Hirshfeld candidacy

To the editor:

I'm writing in response to a recent letter to the editor in support of Stu Hirshfeld running for a place on the Stockbridge Planning Board. I don't know Stu but have no reason to doubt any of the claims made about his character. That said, it is my understanding that Stu has two issues which, to me, disqualify him for this position:

First, Stu owns property adjacent to or abutting the DeSisto School. To me, any action or position he would take with respect to the question about development of the DeSisto School property would represent a conflict of interest and he should recuse himself up front from any related issues before the May 21 election.

Second, if Stu supports the PILOT program in which not-for-profits are encouraged to pay de facto property taxes, this is an absurd position for this area. NFPs are the lifeblood of Stockbridge and the immediate region. If we want to raise revenues, we should have an open mind about the DeSisto School development (see point No. 1).

Ed Lane,
