Letter: Distinction between undocumented, illegal

To the editor:

As letter writer Leon Serra correctly states (April 19), it's not illegal to enter the United States and request asylum. Immigrants who do this are "undocumented" not "illegal."

However, immigrants who enter the United States without first passing through an official United States border checkpoint crossing are illegal. And that is the opposite of the values this country was founded on. I don't recall our ancestors bypassing Ellis Island to enter the United States.

David Potts,
