Letter: Eagle cartoon was offensive to nurses

To the editor:

As a professional registered nurse, I took great offense at the cartoon depiction of nursing that was published in The Eagle oped page on Sunday, July 23.

Nurses are one of the most respected and trusted professions in the country. It is disheartening that our local hometown newspaper would publish such an unprofessional portrayal that made the nurses look uneducated, sloppy, and the brunt of a ridiculous cartoon, which is unconscionable in my opinion.

The profession of nursing is one of the greatest gifts and it is an honor to be among some of the greatest practitioners in the field of caring for patients and families. To make us look comical is an insult to every nurse in this country. I am deeply concerned what message this portrays to our community, our children and even future nurses. This profession is no joke, we deserve respect and I believe we earn that every day of our career.

Nursing is an art and a science and am disappointed with The Eagle for encouraging this type of mind set.

Vicki Sperlonga,
