Letter: Government profits from its closed pot market

Posted

To the editor:

Thanks for all the great reporting on the new cannabis businesses in the Berkshires and how local municipalities have benefited.

It's fascinating how local and state governments legislated themselves into risk free, lucrative partnerships without putting up a penny of capital for planning, marketing, financing or any of the other activities of starting and operating a business. Amazing how our government can obtain immediate financial windfalls while the businesses themselves have been bemoaning the difficulty of making a profit.

In case anyone was wondering why the government had to set up an entirely new bureaucracy for the distribution of cannabis when we already have a distribution system for controlled substances we call pharmacies, you now know. So much for free markets and capitalism.
