Letter: Honest discussion on Berkshire room rates


To the editor:

As a regular visitor to Lenox and the wider Berkshires, I read with interest innkeeper Scott Shortt's comment in the Sunday, April 7 Eagle that it's time for the tourism industry in Lenox to be "honest about where we are, what the challenges and the opportunities are." In the spirit of honest discussion, a short observation: According to rates published online for the Kemble Inn for the last weekend in April 2019, I can stay $100 cheaper per night at boutique hotels in Manhattan's tony SoHo district, home of the cronut.

Perhaps vacancy rates have as much to do with rack rates as they do with marketing campaigns.
