Letter: Knight most well-rounded candidate for Berkshire DA

To the editor:

There are three essential criteria to use when deciding on whom to vote for in the upcoming election for Berkshire County district attorney: extensive experience in both trial and defense law before the court(s); significant experience managing people and overseeing a substantial budget and commitment and integrity toward the people of Berkshire County. Judith C. Knight possesses all three!

Attorney Knight has 30 years of experience in criminal law; as a public defender (CO), trial defense counsel - representing hundreds of clients at law firms in Boston (senior litigation associate), Pittsfield (senior trial attorney) and Great Barrington (partner); and for five years serving as an assistant district attorney in the Middlesex County DA's office, where she tried felonies in both district and superior court, mentored numerous ADAs on their daily caseload, and for over a year was assigned to the child abuse unit.

Judith has taught trial procedures to third- and fourth-year law students at Western New England School of Law. She holds an advanced certification from the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative as a mediation and negotiation specialist. From June 2015 until July 2017 Attorney Knight managed Blantyre, a 5-star, multimillion-dollar hotel in Lenox. She oversaw the entire operation of Blantyre, worked with and managed its employees until a negotiated sale of the property was completed. This unique opportunity gave Judith firsthand experience in managing a multi-million-dollar budget with a 70-staff base (a comparable employee size to the Berkshire County DA's office).

Attorney Knight has wanted to make a difference in the legal justice system in the Berkshires — where she was reared — since she returned to Berkshire County in 1998. Judith became a solo practitioner in 2006 so that she could provide criminal defense and legal representation in all types of cases, including those in the Juvenile Court system. Judy wanted to make her own decisions about who would be her clients - those with means and those without.

For anyone who works with Judy on a case her commitment is clear. She does not mispresent either her background or her desire to use the powerful position of DA in the best interests of the Berkshire County voters. Without a doubt Judith has the most well-rounded legal mind of the three candidates. Consider attending one of the candidate forums scheduled in August and join us in voting for Judith C. Knight on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Al V. Blake,

Tommie L. Hutto-Blake,
