Letter: Lawmakers must protect 'lungs of Massachusetts'

To the editor:

Having seen the devastation of small areas currently being logged off along Potter Mountain Road in Pittsfield State Forest, I feel it is imperative that we stop tax-supported subsidizing of "biomass harvesting" and "active forest management," which is just our state foresters' PC way of saying "logging the hell out of our state forests." We have our own Brazil happening right in our backyard on state-owned land, which is supposedly "protected for the future enjoyment by the public."

For a start, please urge our Berkshire delegation at the State House to support the passage of House Bill H.897. Let the Brazilians take care of their rainforest. We need to preserve our local "lungs of Massachusetts."

John Galt, M.D.,
