Letter: Museum-AG accord is dark day for county

To the editor:

Late last Friday afternoon, the Berkshire Museum posted a summary of its agreement with the Massachusetts Attorney General on its Facebook page. As a Berkshire citizen of nearly 40 years, as a decades-long member of the museum and adorer of the place, I had braced myself for some disappointments knowing that the Attorney General and the Berkshire Museum were working toward a compromise to resolve their enormous differences. A definition of compromise is that both parties end up disappointed — a result of the give-and-take of true compromise.

The first comment to appear on the Berkshire Museum's post arrived quickly and came from one of its most outspoken and stalwart supporters: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And her name is Maura Healey," followed by the enthusiastic all-caps hashtag #YEAHBABY! No disappointment here.

The agreement was no compromise. It undermines our local community as well as the national arts community. It is a dark day in our beautiful hills.

Karen Chase,
