Letter: Tatge's openness will encourage change

To the editor:

Thanks go to Pam Tatge of Jacob's Pillow for her courage and leadership in shining a light on the sensitive issue of racism in the arts and in segments of our wonderful cultural community. ("Jacob's Pillow dismayed by racism at gala," Eagle oped, July 10).

As a homeowner in Stockbridge, I am proud to support our vibrant and robust arts organizations throughout Berkshire County, but for them to remain vibrant and relevant they must be forward thinking regarding the matter of diversity and inclusivity within all the arts, and at all levels.

As a Latino I have, throughout my life, been the target of thoughtless, hurtful racist comments. I feel, however, all minorities and people of color have made terrific gains in this country over the past few decades.

We need to support leaders such as Pam who are in the vanguard of making our community even better by her refreshing openness and by her willingness to expose some of our shortcomings and create productive conversations to address them.

Dick Lobo,

Stockbridge
