To the editor:

Thanks to Lauren Stevens for bringing attention to the problems that plastic bags create in the environment, both before and after their short-lived uses. Do people understand that when they eat fish they also risk consuming the broken-down plastics that the fish consume?

With help from the Tri-Town Health Department, Lenox, Lee and Stockbridge are among the Berkshire towns that have successfully implemented plastic-bag bans. An even larger impact could be realized if Massachusetts enacts a statewide ban. Contact your state representative and tell them it's time to pass a state bill.

Susan May,
