Letter: Transportation progress for elderly, disabled

To the editor:

Transportation for the elderly and disabled in Berkshire County has improved thanks to advocacy by many people and organizations in 2019.

In 2018, we were entitled to 90 social rides (including shopping, friends and religious destinations annually), but those rides were taken away in 2019. After an extensive petition effort and other advocacy work, the transportation benefit has been restored to include 90 social rides in 2020. Thank you to everyone who signed the petition.

Transportation won another issue this year as well, because of the advocacy of the Regional Transportation Authority our BRTA received increases to its base funding — a major accomplishment. That's advocacy in action.

Thank you, Berkshire County, for helping the elderly and disabled people who are your neighbors get around our towns and countryside. Let's keep up the good work.

Merle Ferber,
