Letter: Working Cities Pittsfield helps whole community

To the editor:

It is clear to me that Working Cities Pittsfield is indeed making a difference in our community, pursuing a city that works for everyone. As a graduate of, and now a facilitator of, Hacia Adelante, the Spanish version of Getting Ahead, I witness every day the difference this program makes in people's lives, including my own.

For the Spanish-speaking community, the Berkshires can be isolating, but Working Cities Pittsfield creates spaces where our experiences and vision are valued. They work with the community to offer Spanish translation of documents and advocate for our needs, and when we come to the table at Working Cities Wednesday, we feel welcomed and included in the vision of a just, thriving and safe community.

I am proud to be a part of this work as a facilitator, but also as a member of the Steering Committee. I encourage people with ideas for improving our city (in small and big ways) to join the monthly meetings. While attendees don't get paid to be there with money, we do get paid back in building our own community, and that makes it all the more worth it.

Finally, I want to thank Working Cities Pittsfield for letting me be part of this initiative, and also to all the people who day after day work to make our community a great community.

Alex Valdivieso,
