Letter: Worth effort to check unclaimed property site

To the editor:

A couple of months ago the Berkshire Eagle posted a full page notice from the state treasurer's office about unclaimed property. I recognized several names on the list, contacted them, and they filed claims with the state. One person I helped had $300 waiting to be given back, another over $50. I also checked my name and address and found there was a $5 (the minimum) rebate waiting for me. Well it's better in my pocket than in the state treasury!

So, could you use at least $5 or maybe more? Please check Mass.gov and filter to the treasurer's office, or go online to findmassmoney.com, put in your name and town and zip code. Check out the former addresses where you have lived as well because a dividend might have gone there after you moved and couldn't be forwarded so it ended up with the state treasury. You can also call 617-367-0400 to help you search or file a claim for you or a deceased family member.

I hope you will be pleasantly surprised just as I have been.

Madonna Meagher,

Great Barrington
