Letter: Yes, the government is responsible for our safety

To the editor:

Sherry Rice, in her letter ("Reader finds travel restrictions a bit too restrictive," Eagle, July 30), says "it is up to all of us to look after ourselves, not the government."

Doesn't she believe in the Declaration of Independence, in which our Founding Fathers wrote in 1776 "it is the Right of the People to institute new Government, organizing its Powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness"?

So for almost 350 years, our government — and not each individual — has been responsible for our safety.
