Mount Everett's Devin Farnum wins Berkshire Classic golf meet
STOCKBRIDGE -- Devin Farnum shot a 1-over-par 36 on the back nine at the Stockbridge Golf Club for a 1-stroke victory over Mitch Omelenchuck and Matt Lawrence in the fifth annual Berkshire Classic golf meet at Stockbridge Golf Club.
Farnum, from Mount Everett, closed out his rounds with four pars and a birdie on the par-4 18 to finish at 7-over-par 78. Taconic's Omelenchuck, who shot 36 on the front nine, had two double bogeys on the final five holes -- including a double on the 18th -- to end his day at 79. That tied Omelenchuck with Drury's Lawrence, who went 39-40 on the day.
Farnum is the first Mount Everett golfer to win the event.
Farnum, who played with Lee's Jared Fadding and Lawrence, was part of a group that started and finished first. He had to wait until several other groups posted their scores before knowing if he had won.
"I find it just lets you sit back and relax with it. Of course, you've got to wait to see like who's going to beat me," he said. "I think it can be better to come in first, because then you don't have everyone yakking in your ear with ‘This guy shot this score, this guy shot that score."
Pittsfield's Ryan Grande had the second-best round on the back nine, shooting 38 to finish with an 80, which was good for fourth place.
