New Ashford annual town meeting preview

Posted

Where: New Ashford Town Hall, 188 Mallery Road

The annual town meeting at 7 p.m. will be preceded by a special town meeting at 6:30 p.m. for voters to authorize the first few payments — totaling $346,000 — due in the early stages of constructing a high-speed broadband network in town. The annual town meeting will address mostly budgetary matters.

Bylaw change: Article 14 seeks to change a zoning bylaw to require any changes in driveway alignment to require a written permit issued by the Planning Board after review by the Conservation Commission, road superintendent, building inspector and the tree warden. The change is an update to make the outdated bylaw consistent with other town regulations.

Appointed positions: Articles 15 and 16 would change the process of electing some town officials. Both tree warden and fire warden are elected positions that would become appointed positions if the articles pass. Some smaller towns find it difficult to find willing candidates for such positions.

Tanker truck: Article 10 will allot $15,000 to add to a possible state grant to allow the fire department to buy a new tanker truck. The truck is used to haul water to fight fires.
