NORTH ADAMS — A man who was shot in the neck Tuesday night while walking along River Street remained hospitalized Wednesday.

The man, 62, whose name was not released, was taken to Berkshire Medical Center's North Adams facility, then was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in New York for surgery, North Adams Police Chief Jason Wood said in a news release.

The shooting occurred near 71 River St. about 7:20 p.m., when a neighbor who heard one shot called 911. He originally had dismissed the sound as noise from nearby car garages.

Once the neighbor heard pained breathing, he stepped outside and saw the victim across the street, stumbling while carrying a white container of liquid.

The victim was calling out, "I think I've been shot," and tripped into the road, according to the neighbor, who asked not to be named. At that point, he walked out to help the victim and noticed blood flowing from a neck wound. He called out to his partner inside to call 911.

The neighbor said that nobody was on the road or sidewalks when he stepped out and saw the victim. As he waited for emergency responders, he said, the victim was going in and out of consciousness. He said he flipped over a shopping cart so the victim could sit.

A female officer arrived first and immediately began administering care, according to the neighbor.

Michele Kirby, who lives nearby, at 135 River St., said she saw two ambulances and four cruisers arrive and block off the road. Kirby said that the neighborhood is safe and she never has known of any gun violence.

"This is probably the first we've had an incident like this, as far as a drive-by shooting," she said.

Kirby said that she also was outside when the shooting took place but heard no shots or commotion from her house, which is one-tenth of a mile from where the victim was found.

Wood said in the release that there was "no risk to public safety" in North Adams.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Brad Vivori of the North Adams Police Department at 413-664-4944.
