North Adams Police investigate report of feces smeared outside woman's apartment

NORTH ADAMS — Police are investigating an incident early Wednesday in which human feces was smeared outside a woman's apartment.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the woman called police to report that someone had smeared feces on her door, siding and air conditioning unit at her apartment in the Brayton Hill Terrace neighborhood, according to a report from the North Adams Police dispatcher.

The dispatcher's report refers to the caller as a black woman, and lists two people, one white male and one white female, as "involved parties."

Photos of the scene have been circulating across social media, with many people characterizing the incident as a racially motivated attack.

But Police Chief Jason Wood was reluctant to go so far.

"Nothing points to a `hate crime' at the moment," he told The Eagle via email on Wednesday afternoon. "The officer assigned to the complaint has not written his narrative yet. So, as of now, all I can say is it's under investigation."
