North County EATS! aims to drum up business

NORTH ADAMS -- Bacon Alfredo Sauce. Ultimate Nachos. Beer-battered scallops.

Such are the offerings of North County EATS!, the first annual restaurant week of its kind, running Jan. 26 to Feb. 1.

Nearly 20 restaurants across Adams, North Adams, and Williamstown have signed up to participate and will offer a variety of deals -- between $5 and $30 -- from appetizers to entrees, for lunch and dinner, at increments of $5.

"It’s historically a slow week for restaurants," said Jennifer Civello, Executive Director of the Williamstown Chamber of Commerce. "This will help bring people in."

Among the restaurants that will be offering special prix fixe menus are Desperado’s, The Freight Yard Pub, The ‘6 House Pub, Hops and Vines, Public Eat and Drink, Pera Bistro, The Water Street Grill, the Adams Ale House, and many more.

The Williamstown Chamber worked in partnership with the North Adams Chamber of Commerce and the North Adams Office of Tourism and Community Events to frenetically set up the event in time for late January.

"People tend to hibernate here during the Winter," said Veronica Bosley, North Adams’ director of tourism and community events, adding that by offering meals at a various prices, the organizers hope to get people out to a restaurant more than once during the week.

When it was first conceived, the trio of organizations was planning to roll out the event in 2015, but decided to sprint for early 2014 instead.

"Full disclosure, we started putting this together in December," said Veronica Bosley, North Adams’ director of tourism and community events.

Despite the late start, Bosley said the event has already received a great response from local restaurants. By Thursday, restaurants were still looking to participate.

Civello said the organizations will be asking restaurants to track their sales and compare them to years past, so they can measure the impact of the deals week.

"It’s kind of our pilot project," she said.

Prices for meals start at $5, Civello said, in order to be inclusive to a wide range of restaurants. Angelina’s Sub Shop in North Adams, for example, will be offering a $5 lunch meal deal.

At any price point, the organizers are drumming up as much interest in the North County EATS! as possible. They’ve used restaurant registration fees to advertise in print, radio, and on billboards along the Route 8 corridor. More than 400 people have already liked the North County EATS! Facebook page.
