Northern Berkshire: Free tax prep available to qualified residents

Volunteers are organizing at five Northern Berkshire locations this tax season for low- and moderate-income households, three of which are AARP tax sites. Appointments are required.

The AARP tax sites are the Adams Council on Aging, 3 Hoosac St Adams, 413-743-8333; Harper Center, 118 Church St., Williamstown, 413- 458-8250; and the Spitzer Center, 116 Ashland St., North Adams, 413- 662-3125.

Tax preparation for other low-income taxpayers is available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at Berkshire Community Action Council, 85 Main St., second floor, North Adams. Call 413-663-3014 for an appointment.

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to offer free tax preparation services through the VITA program for taxpayers with disabilities or limited English-speaking skills, those 60 or older, or households with an annual income below $56,000.

Beginning Feb. 10, hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in MCLA's Murdock Hall, 375 Church St., North Adams. For appointments, call HfH offices at 413-442-0002 or 413-442-3181. Walk-ins will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit of up to over $1,000 may be available if one member of the family unit is over age 65. For this credit, bring property tax bills and water bills or rental amount.

Everyone is required to bring last year's return and all that would apply of the following: W-2, 1099-Int, 1099-Div, 1099R, 1099-SSA, 1099-G, 1099-MISC, 1099-B, and any other income, as well as 1095-A or 1095-B as proof of insurance.
