Peebles changing over to Gordmans and is hiring in North Adams
NORTH ADAMS — Another store at Steeple Plaza is closing.
Peebles is set to close in early February. But the space will be refilled quickly by another store — Gordmans. And they are looking for employees.
Stage Stores — parent company of Peebles, Bealls, Palais Royal, Goodys and Stage — says all of its store brands will be converted to Gordmans, which is described as an "off-price" retail store featuring apparel and home goods.
"Stage found that shoppers responded positively to Gordmans' off-price concept," according to a company statement. "So Stage is converting most of its department stores to Gordmans off-price stores in 2020."
Not all the stores will be converted. For example, the Peebles in Southampton will close and not change over to Gordmans.
"As is common practice in the retail industry, Stage stores reviews its store fleet on a regular basis and exits underperforming locations," the statement reads. "The Southampton store will close in January."
The North Adams store will be closed temporarily for a little over a week, ahead of the scheduled Feb. 18 grand opening as a Gordmans store.
Gordmans will host a job fair from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 7 at 78 Main St. in North Adams (the Peebles location) to begin to staff the new operation.
Interested candidates are invited to first apply online at gordmans.com/careers and then visit the job fair. Walk-ins are welcome.
Full-time Gordmans associates are offered benefits, including health insurance (medical, prescription drug, dental and vision); a 401(k) savings plan; paid vacation and holidays; and a 20 percent associate discount on merchandise. Gordmans offers flexible full-time and part-time schedules.
Company officials declined to discuss the number of employees needed, or how many Peebles employees would be retained for the new store.
Stage Stores — established in 1920 — operates more than 600 department stores, and it also operates 158 Gordmans stores in 42 states.
