People: Holt, colleagues to moderate Dem debate
Holt, colleagues to moderate Dem debate
Lester Holt and four of his NBC News colleagues will share moderating duties for the first debate of 2020 Democratic presidential contenders.
The debate, shown on NBC News networks, will unfold over two nights in Miami on June 26 and June 27. For each night, Holt will anchor the first hour, where he'll be joined by Savannah Guthrie of the "Today" show and Jose Diaz-Balart of Telemundo. The second hour will feature MSNBC opinion host Rachel Maddow and "Meet the Press" moderator Chuck Todd.
The Democratic National Committee is expected to announce later this week which candidates meet the threshold for participation, and which night the candidates will appear on.
The events will be held in Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center.
CNN's Acosta defends press, and himself
Wherever CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta goes, he's followed by the g-word. That's grandstand. He even heard it jokingly when he met Ted Olson, who was part of the legal team that beat back President Donald Trump's attempt last year to pull Acosta's reporting pass.
It's usually no laughing matter. While Trump's detractors love Acosta's willingness to talk back to the president, supporters seethe.
The criticism rankles Acosta, but he's not backing down. He's written a book that steals Trump's derisive phrase for journalists he doesn't like — "The Enemy of the People" — and tries to throw it back at him.
Acosta said White House reporters never expected to spend so much of their time fact-checking a presidential election, but he thinks they've done it well.
Ex-heavy metal drummer now a police officer
The former drummer of the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch has a new gig, as a southern Indiana police officer.
Jeremy Spencer was sworn in Sunday with the Rockport Police Department. He grew up near that Ohio River community in the city the Boonville, which he left at 19.
Spencer joined Five Finger Death Punch in 2005. He was the band's drummer until late 2018.
He tells WFIE-TV he's always admired police officers' work, saying, "You just see the impact they have on everyone's life. It's so important."
Spencer's police duties are part-time. He's splitting his time between Rockport and Las Vegas. He says he hasn't retired from the music business.
Loudwire, an online magazine that covers hard rock and heavy metal music, voted him "Best Drummer of 2015."
