CHICOPEE — The No. 6 Pittsfield volleyball team hit the road to play No. 3 Chicopee on Tuesday night in a Western Massachusetts Division II quarterfinal, and the Generals nearly sprung the upset in a narrow 3-2 loss to the Pacers.

Chicopee won by set scores of 25-15, 25-21, 14-25, 17-25 and 15-13.

"They were doing a really good job of tipping, they were really good at finding their spots," PHS coach Brian Lawton said of Chicopee's success in the first set. "I told my girls to be light on their feet and be ready to move. For the rest of the night, we did a good job getting those balls up and getting it to the offense."

Brennah Brickle had 26 assists, four aces and three blocks in her final match for PHS. Fellow senior Shakia Green had four kills and six digs, and the third PHS senior, Florence Afamukoe, had eight digs.

Lawton, who replaced five of his six starters coming into this year — Brickle was the lone returnee — said that his three seniors were key in the team's 13-7 season.

"That was huge for us, having senior leadership like that," Lawton said. "Brennah was our only starter back from last year's team, had a bunch of people coming up from JV. It was a quick learning experience, and having those seniors on the team provide the leadership was key for us early on and for the rest of the season."

Marie Butler had eight kills and five aces, while Emma King had six kills and two blocks, and Hannah Wheeler had 13 digs.

Lawton said that the fifth set was back-and-forth throughout, and the teams were tied at 12-12 before the Pacers finally pulled away.

Chicopee advances to play Minnechaug in the semifinals on Thursday at Chicopee Comp.
