Police say Pittsfield man arrested after foot chase was carrying stolen gun

PITTSFIELD — A city man faces multiple firearm charges for allegedly toting an apparent stolen handgun in broad daylight.

Following a foot chase Monday afternoon in the Morningside area, Pittsfield police arrested 32-year-old Andre Austin who supposedly was carrying a Taurus .38-caliber revolver that was reported stolen out of the state of Georgia, according to police.

Austin will be arraigned Tuesday in Central Berkshire District Count on seven charges, four involving carrying a firearm and ammunition without a license and/or proper identification.

Around 3 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Tyler and Cherry streets after someone reported a man handling or adjusting a handgun in public.

The initial responding officer exited his cruiser and ordered the individual to expose his hands, at which point the suspect began running from the officer who gave chase. With the help of backup patrol units, Austin was quickly apprehended in the vicinity of Tyler and Grove streets.

Police say Austin also faces charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
