Prairie Home Companion returning to Tanglewood

LENOX — Chris Thile will be bringing A Prairie Home Companion back to Tanglewood next summer.

The show will broadcast from Tanglewood's Koussevitzky Music Shed at 5:45 p.m. June 30.

This will be Thile's first appearance at Tanglewood since becoming host of A Prairie Home Companion in the fall of 2016, just months after Companion's last Tanglewood visit with Garrison Keillor.

The Tanglewood date will be the final stop of the 2018 broadcast season, which will kick off with broadcasts in San Francisco, Portland, Ore. and Austin in January. In the spring the famed radio show will visit some favorite outdoor concert venues including Wolf Trap, Ravinia, and the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery.

2018 will include broadcasts from the show's home, The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, as well as a show from across the river at Minneapolis' State Theatre before returning to The Town Hall for three live broadcasts as well as a show from the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.

Additional venues will be announced in the fall, as well as a lineup of performers for the show's season opener and fall run in St. Paul.

Each broadcast will feature a wide array of musicians, some you know, and others you'll soon be hearing about, as well as poets, comics and storytellers. Popular features and fan favorites from the first season, including musicians' and composers' birthdays as well as the live Powdermilk Instant Song Request will be back—as will Thile's signature feature of each live broadcast — a new song composed and performed by Thile for each live broadcast.

Thile was hand selected by Garrison Keillor to take over as host of the long-running live radio variety show in the fall of 2016. A multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow and a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, Thile is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist.

As a soloist Thile has released five albums, including his most recent, released in 2013, Bach: Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer. In February 2013 Thile won a Grammy for his work on "The Goat Rodeo Sessions," collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Then, in September 2014, Thile and Meyer released their latest album collaboration, "Bass + Mandolin," which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Thile's latest collaborations include an album with Brad Mehidau and Bach Trios with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer.
