In keeping with the statewide Summer Reading program theme, "Build a Better World," the Milne Public Library, 1095 Main St., Williamstown, is offering two special kids' events this week to build upon the theme. On Tuesday, at 11 a.m., Jungle Jim returns with "Minecraft Madness," performing magic, comedy and with balloons. Then, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, the LEGO Club meets, offering free play and optional construction challenges with LEGO blocks. Both events are free. Info: or 413-458-5369

Volunteer judges are needed for WordXWord's first-ever Western Mass Invitational Team Poetry Slam, which will take place on Sunday, July 30 at The Mount: Edith Wharton's Home, located at 2 Plunkett St., Lenox. Eight world-class poetry teams will compete in this bout; six of which are bound for the National Poetry Slam, which will be held next month in Denver. Judges are being sought for the following time slots: preliminary round (3-5 p.m.), second chance bout (6-7 p.m.), championship bout (7 p.m. until finish). No experience necessary to be a judge. Berkshire Family Focus and The Mount: Edith Wharton's Home, 2 Plunkett St., Lenox, have teamed up this summer to present the free "Books and Blooms" family story time series. The next one takes place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and features the book "Peeper and Zeep" by Adam Gudeon. Families meet in the Italian Garden for the story and some crafts. Barrington Stage Youth Theatre presents "Bye Bye Birdie," which open this Wednesday and runs through Aug. 13, at the Berkshire Museum, 39 South St., Pittsfield. This upbeat musical production is directed and choreographed by Julianne Katz. Tickets are $16 for adults, $12 for youths; $10 preview performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Thursday. Shows are sold out for this Friday and Saturday.

The Housatonic Valley Association will present the free river paddle trip, "In Search of Turtles with Tom Tyning," from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. This approximately 4-mile trip is a beginner level excursion. Participants will paddle upstream from Woods Pond and back enjoying the Housatonic River as they search with Tyning for painted and other turtle species basking along the river's edge and learn about the challenges to the population.
