Roundup: Aubrey Blanchard nets pair as Monument Mountain tops Monson

Posted
MONSON — Aubrey Blanchard can't stop scoring, and the Monument Mountain girls soccer team can't stop winning.

Blanchard fired in another two goals on Monday, leading her Spartans (8-0) to a 2-0 win over Monson.

"I would always say it's a team effort, a lot of other parts are moving that allow her to have that success, but she's an outstanding player," Monument coach Jess Platt said, "she has a lot of grit and is able to get it done."

Both goals came in the second half. Gabi DeFelice set up the first in the 67th minute, then Meri Powell made the assist for the second in the 74th minute.

Helen Pajeski made three saves to keep the clean sheet.

The Spartans, coming off a Western Mass. Division III championship appearance last year, are firing on all cylinders at the moment. Platt said that the success is due, in part, to the closeness of her players.

"We've been successful in the depth of our team, we have a lot of experience coming into this season," Platt said. "We have a lot of trust between the girls on the field, the girls on the bench, they are coming together six days a week. I think they have a real sense of community through Monument soccer."
