Roundup: Gian's late touchdown lifts Taconic football to win over Easthampton

EASTHAMPTON — Taconic's Nikos Gian took an 11-yard scamper to the end zone to help the Braves to a 16-8 victory over Easthampton on Friday night at White Brook Middle School.

The game was a rematch of the 2016 Western Mass. Division III semifinals, which the Braves won 56-6.

The Braves were led by the duo of Gian (11 rushes, 49 yards) and Cedric Rose (13 rushes, 59 yards).

Rose also rushed for a touchdown, helping Taconic take an 8-0 lead into halftime.

Easthampton evened the scored in the fourth quarter when Nick Pellegrini connected with Damon Deluzio in the right corner of the end zone for an 18-yard score with just over five minutes to go.

Smith Vocational 40, Drury 16

NORTHAMPTON — Drury started its season with a loss to Smith Vocational.

Drury held an 8-6 lead after a quarter when Frankie Cooper took a kickoff off a Smith Voc. score to the barn, scampering 60 yards. Obilio Rodriguez then hit TIm Koloc on the two-point conversion.

The Vikings responded, however, with two 14-0 quarters to take a commanding lead into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Rodriguez recorded his first touchdown pass of the season, hitting Tim Brazeau to give the Blue Devils a consolation score.

SPRINGFIELD — The McCann Tech boys soccer team opened its season with an 8-1 win over Duggan.

The Hornets broke out to a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Michael Wojtaszek had four goals in the win, while Mathew Bailey had a pair and Nick LaForest chipped in with three assists.

Devon Griswold made five saves in goal.

PITTSFIELD — Mike Kays shot a 38 to lead Taconic (1-1, 1-1 Berkshire North) to a win over Wahconah (0-2, 0-2) at Berkshire Hills Country Club.

Connor Champoux shot a 44 for the Braves, while Caden Frazier shot a 50 for Wahconah.

"The course is obviously wet with all the rain we've had over the past few days, so the course is playing long," Taconic coach Mike Hillman said. "That didn't seem to bother us too much today. At Berkshire Hills, the greens are one of the tougher parts of the course and that's why some of the scores were a little higher, I think. The front of the lineup with some pretty strong scores."

PITTSFIELD — Visiting Lenox improved to 2-0 on the year with a straight-sets win over Taconic, which was playing its season opener.

Lenox won by set scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-10.

Bombee Lahart had 10 kills for the Millionaires, while Anna Lynch had seven aces and 12 digs and Kasey Vallee had three kills and eight digs.

For Taconic, Rachel Williams had four assists, two kills and one ace. Tyler Williamson had five digs, one kill and one ace.

Girls Soccer

Hoosac Valley 8, Drury 0

NORTH ADAMS — Hoosac Valley got a goal from Shaleigh Levesque 39 seconds into the game and the Hurricanes never looked back in a win over Drury.

Hoosac (1-0) led 3-0 17 minutes into the contest.

Claudia Bresett had a pair of goals while Alie Mendel had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes.

Alyssa Russel stopped 13 shots for Drury (1-1).

NORTH ADAMS — MCLA fell to Union in the CIAO Classic thanks to two second-half goals.

Vincent Oliveto broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, then 20 minutes later Connor Horan gave Union and insurance goal.

Kamron Anderson stopped five shots for MCLA in the loss. MCLA falls to 1-2. MCLA will play Lehman in the CIAO Classic today at 2 p.m.

NORTHAMPTON — Two second-half goals helped Smith Vocational keep McCann Tech remain winless in the Pioneer South.

Marissa Mayhew and Megan Cone scored for Smith in the second half. Mayhew also had an assist.
