Roundup: Hoosac Valley girls soccer team falls to South Hadley in Western Mass. D-III tournament

Posted

SOUTH HADLEY — Hoosac Valley couldn't overcome a first-half barrage from South Hadley in the quarterfinal round of the Western Massachusetts Division III girls soccer tournament. The top-seeded, and unbeaten, Tigers stormed out to tune of a six-goal first-half and punched a ticket to the semifinals with the win.

"They're fast," Hoosac Valley coach Kathy Budaj said. "Their ball skills and first touch [are great]. You can tell that they play and work well together."

Gabby Billetz was busy all afternoon in the Hoosac Valley net. After a bumpy first half, the No. 8 Hurricanes pitched a shutout in the game's final 40 minutes. However, Hoosac's offense struggled to gain any traction. Senior midfielder Shaleigh Levesque did all of the damage for the road team, netting a goal in each half and both were unassisted.

South Hadley (18-0-1) had five different players score in the outing and Maddie Doolittle led all scorers with a pair of goals. The Tigers used a platoon in the net as Bridget Sears and Riley Suchenicz combined for 11 saves.

Hoosac Valley finished 1-1 in tournament play after defeating No. 9 Palmer in an overtime thriller on Tuesday, and the Hurricanes went 8-5-7 on the year.

The Hurricanes will need to replace six players headed into 2020 as Levesque, Cairagan Greene, Faith Hall, Grace Kronick, Madelaine Martin and Riley Robinson will all graduate this spring.
