GREAT BARRINGTON — The Monument Mountain girls basketball team locked in defensively in the second half to run away from Lenox, 56-31.

The Spartans improve to 5-3 with the win, while Lenox slumps to 2-7.

Destiny Brown was the high scorer on the night, dropping 21 points for Monument in the win. Meri Powell added 14 and Fiona Horan had nine for the Spartans.

Up just 20-17 at halftime, Monument outscored Lenox 15-6 in the third, and 21-8 in the fourth to seal the win.

"Our defense picked up a few notches," Monument coach Steve Soule said of the halftime adjustment. "We played pretty good defense in the first half, but I'd say we played really good in the second half.

"Offensively, we moved the ball around and shared the ball more."

Sophie Patella had nine points in the loss, while Tabor Paul and Nicole Gamberoni each had seven.

Boys Basketball

Wahconah 79, Paulo Freire 63

DALTON — The Warriors improved to 5-2 with a win over Paulo Freire. Kevin Huban was the driving force behind Wahconah's offense, scoring 36 points. Tom Burris, who recently rejoined the team after recovering from a foot injury, added another 21 points for the Warriors.

"Great effort by our guys," Wahconah coach Dustin Belcher said. "Having Burris back is great for a number of reasons and plenty of them don't show up on the score sheet. He is a great locker room guy and is helping us solidify our identity."

Arostotle Garcia kept Paulo Freire competitive, scoring 35, doing most of his damage in the first half.

"Garcia was on fire, but we switched to a man defense and held him to no points in the third quarter," Belcher said.

While it was just a three-point game at half, the Warriors outscored Paulo Freire 21-8 in the third to take a commanding lead, winning their second-straight game.
