Roundup: Pittsfield Post 68 steals win from Belchertown

Posted

BELCHERTOWN — The Pittsfield Post 68 American Legion baseball team improved to 2-0 on the year with a road win over Belchertown Post 239, 6-5.

How the team got the win, though, is remarkable.

Trailing 5-0 after two innings, Post 68 tied the game up in the fourth thanks to a four-run inning, then in the top of the eighth, the team executed a double-steal to plate the winning run.

In the fourth, Joe Traversa hit a three-run triple, then Carter Matthews laid down a two-out, drag bunt to push across the tying run in the game.

In the eighth, Traversa was on first base with two outs, with Cal Messina on third. Traversa faked a steal attempt to second, and Belchertown became so focused on getting Traversa out, that Messina was able to sneak home.

Henry Sniezek got the win in relief, going 4 1/3 innings, while Hunter Potash earned the save. Messina had two hits and three runs scored, while Traversa had three hits.
