Ryan, Magargal on top at Little Brown Jug after Day 1

James Ryan and Steve Magargal jumped out to a three-shot lead in the 46th annual Little Brown Jug best-ball tournament at Wahconah Country Club on Friday with a sizzling round of 8-under par 63.

The red-hot Ryan, a member at The Orchards and former member at Worthington Golf Club, made an amazing nine birdies out of the team's 10 in carding nines of 32 and 31. Ryan and Magargal, who is a member at Berkshire Hills and Worthington, had two runs of three consecutive birdies. The duo birdied Nos. 5-7 on the front nine and Nos. 11-13 on the back side.

Two teams — the Wahconah pairing of Tom Czelusniak and Rich Rowe along with the Connecticut duo of Brent Dietz and Bill Tefft — are tied for second place. Dietz and Tefft have won the Jug title in two of the last three years.

Brian Steele (Country Club of North Carolina) and Paul Steele (Atascotcita Country Club, Texas) are alone in fourth place at 68. Seven teams shot 69, including defending champions Chris Ferriter and Joe Wilson. The Berkshire Hills team of Jeff Puleri and Randy Driscoll also shot 69, as did Bekshire Hills' Bob Linn, who is coming off a win in the Allied Championship, and Jim Hosey.

The championship flight teams will tee off between 8:30 and 9:20 a.m. this morning The final round is Sunday.
