Soccer roundup: Welch powers Mounties to win over Generals

Posted

PITTSFIELD — Finn Welch scored a hat trick to lead his Mount Greylock boys to a 4-1 win over Pittsfield under the lights at Berkshire Community College Friday.

The Generals (1-1, 0-1 Berkshire North) actually led first when Matt Miller scored on a pass from David Kankam just over a minute into the game. Kankam sprung himself free down the right wing, and his ground pass back to the center of the field found Miller to slot home. That proved to be the high-water mark for Pittsfield.

Greylock (1-1, 1-0) slowly started imposing itself on the game, and in the 18th minute Welch popped up with his first goal, finishing off a pass from Emi Soza-Foias. The two then teamed up again for the second goal, with Soza-Foias taking a quick free kick and passing it to Welch, who sized up a shot to curl past Avi Snowise. Greylock led 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Greylock needed just under four minutes to add a third, when Soza-Foias capitalized on a bad giveaway by the Pittsfield defense to score an easy goal. Welch rounded out the scoring with 17 minutes to play, putting a shot across Snowise and into the corner.

Snowise made five saves in the loss, while Oscar Low stopped two shots for Greylock.
