Taconic, New Lebanon swimmers split in the pool
The Berkshire Eagle
PITTSFIELD — Taconic and New Lebanon entered Friday nearing at the midway points of their respective swimming sesaons. With both teams starting to get into the groove of a 10-meet calendar, coaches on both sides decided it would be a good time to make their swimmers uncomfortable and try some new events.
The New Lebanon boys (3-3) defeated the Taconic boys (1-5) to improve to .500 on the season, while the Taconic girls won their second meet of the year with a 101-48 win over the girls from New York.
"We threw Liam Buckenroth into the 500-yard freestyle and he just kills it," New Lebanon's coach Tim Christiansen said. "I am really happy for these boys because they haven't had a winning season, or anything close to it, in such a long time."
Buckenroth, who is an eighth grader, played a role in four events for the Tigers. Jeffrey Miller, who made sectionals last season, had a hand in three events for New Lebanon.
For the Braves, their two freshmen boys — Steve Zuccalo and Ben Bradway — combined to win three events.
Zuccalo took first in the 200 free (2:26.03), while Bradway won the 200 IM (2:54.5) and the 100 breaststroke (1:30.41).
"Our freshmen are really pushing themselves to compete at the high school level," Marisa Plant, the tenth-year coach of the Braves, said. "Tonight some of our swimmers were in different events to switch it up a bit. It is good to be able to switch it up and still try their best. Being able to do the different events helps us out so we can switch some things up in events during close meets."
On the girls side it was all about the Braves (3-3), winning seven of the 11 events in the meet over the Tigers (1-5).
Caitlyn Hall helped her team with wins in the 200 individual medley (2:51.21), 100 freestyle (1:11.28), and was also part of a Taconic win in the Medley relay (2:31.63).
"I try to always go out there and try my best," Hall said. "We've gotten a lot better and we never give up on each other. My focus is to reach the states in the 100 fly."
Natalia Argelo (200 free), Delaney Ivas (50 free), Rain Hajjar (500 free) and Brodianne Magner (100 breast) all won individual events for the Taconic girls.
With the season halfway over, swimmers from both sides are setting their sights on individuals and state tournaments.
"Chloe Meyers, Mikayla Corsey and Mia Thompson have really stepped up for us this year," Christiansen said. "We are really looking forward for individuals at the end of the year and are focused on getting some good times. They're going to be a little sore coming up because we'll be pushing them in the pool for a while."
The swimmers from New Lebanon will dive back in on Monday for a meet with Mount Anthony. Taconic's next meet will be next Wednesday when they face rival Pittsfield.
