Taconic's Mike Kays finishes second at Western Mass. Division I golf tournament

CHICOPEE — Taconic's Mike Kays finished second overall at the Western Massachusetts Division I tournament at Chicopee Country Club on Monday.

Kays shot a 75, one shot off leader Kevin Allard of Longmeadow. The top-six finish qualifies Kays for the Division I state tournament.

Kays had a strong round, including an eagle on hole No. 2. Missed putts hurt him down the stretch, however, as he bogeyed the last two holes of the round. Pars on either hole could've set up a playoff.

Kays said he was aware of the stakes heading to his final two holes.

"I kind of knew on the last hole," he said of where he stood on the leader board. "I had two putts to tie [Allard], so that put a little pressure on me. ... The putt lipped out."

Despite just missing out on the top spot, the second-place finish caps a strong two-week run for the Taconic senior. He finished in first place at the Berkshire Classic on Oct. 15, and now he's extended his season by qualifying for the state tournament.

"This year I wanted to win The Classic and qualify for state, so I can mark that off my checklist," he said.

As a team Taconic shot a 380. Longmeadow finished first as a team with a 325.

Mike Kays 75, Conor Champaux 90, Brent Arseneau 104, Derek Wurtenberger 114, Andrew King 111, Nick Slocik 124.
