PITTSFIELD — A tornado warning was briefly in effect Wednesday afternoon for parts of Berkshire County and Columbia County, N.Y., but was canceled.

The warning was issued for the period through 4 p.m. for towns south of Pittsfield, including Lenox and Lee, but was canceled before that hour arrived, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Christina Speciale.

"A tornado warning means we're watching a storm that has the potential to create a tornado," she said.

Some Berkshire County residents received emergency alerts to their phones shortly after 3:30 p.m., urging them to take shelter.

A severe thunderstorm and flash flood watch is in effect through the evening.
