Tractor-trailer snags telephone wires, causing traffic snarl on Dalton Avenue

PITTSFIELD — A tractor-trailer pulled down a utility pole on Dalton Avenue in dramatic fashion on Monday afternoon, causing traffic headaches for motorists and prompting a search for the driver.

The truck was heading west about 1 p.m. when it apparently snagged some low-hanging utility wires, yanking down the attached pole with such force that it crossed four lanes of traffic and landed near the Sherwin Williams store on the opposite side of the road, police said. The truck did not stop.

The pole caused minor damage to two vehicles, but no injuries were reported.

The incident compromised traffic lights at the intersection of Dalton Avenue and Meadowview Drive. Eversource and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation responded to restore power to the lights, police said.

Officers had been unable to locate the driver, whose tractor-trailer was described as having a green cab and a gray body.
