Here's what's streaming on virtual screening programs offered by non-profit, year-round, independent cinemas in the Berkshires and environs. A REGULAR WOMAN

Based on the tragic "honor killing" of Hatun Aynur Surucu in Berlin in 2005, this film portrays the short life of a free spirited young woman living with an ultra-conservative Turkish Muslim family in Berlin. Aynur escapes the abusive family and struggles to attain independence, only to be shot to death by her youngest brother shortly before she is set to move away. With Almila Bagriacik, Aram Arami. In German, with English subtitles. 1 hour, 37 minutes. TC

BEAU TRAVAIL

Amid the azure waters and sunbaked desert landscapes of Djibouti, a French Foreign Legion sergeant (Denis Lavant) sows the seeds of his own ruin as his obsession with a striking young recruit (Gregoire Colin) plays out to the thunderous, operatic strains of Benjamin Britten. Director Claire Denis and cinematographer Agnes Godard fold military and masculine codes of honor, colonialism's legacy, destructive jealousy, and repressed desire into shimmering, hypnotic images that ultimately explode in one of the most startling and unforgettable endings in all of modern cinema. Filmmaker Don Millar examines the life and works of Colombian artist and sculptor Fernando Botero. 1 hour, 24 minutes. TC

COUP 53

While making a documentary about the CIA/MI6 coup in Iran in 1953, Iranian director Taghi Amirani and editor Walter Murch ( "Apocalypse Now," "The Conversation," "The English Patient") discover never seen before archive material hidden for decades. The 16mm footage and documents not only allow the filmmakers to tell the story of the overthrow of the Iranian government in unprecedented detail, but it also leads to explosive revelations about dark secrets buried for 67 years. Working with actor Ralph Fiennes ("The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Schindler's List," "The English Patient") to help bring the lost material to life, what began as a historical documentary about four days in August 1953 turned into a live investigation, taking the filmmakers into uncharted cinematic waters. 1 hour, 59 minutes. CREEM: AMERICA'S ONLY ROCK 'N' ROLL MAGAZINE

Capturing the messy upheaval of the '70s just as rock was re-inventing itself, this doc explores CREEM Magazine's humble beginnings in post-riot Detroit, following its upward trajectory from underground paper to national powerhouse, then bearing witness to its imminent demise following the tragic and untimely deaths of its visionary publisher, Barry Kramer, and its most famous alum and genius clown prince, Lester Bangs, a year later. Fifty years after publishing its first issue, "America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine" remains a seditious spirit in music and culture. 1 hour, 15 minutes. VC

CRESCENDO

A world-famous conductor (played by "Toni Erdmann`s" Peter Simonischek) accepts a job to create an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra to perform at a peace conference. The two factions continue to spar both on- and offstage, while the conductor presses the young people to put aside their hatred at least for the three weeks leading up to the climactic concert. DEERSKIN

A man's obsession with owning the designer deerskin jacket of his dreams leads him to turn his back on his humdrum life in the suburbs, blow his life savings, and even turn him to crime. TC

DESERT ONE

Using new archival sources and unprecedented access to key players on both sides, master documentarian Barbara Kopple ("Harlan County, USA") reveals the true story behind one of the most daring rescues in modern US history: a secret mission to free hostages captured during the 1979 Iranian revolution. 1 hour, 47 minutes. DIANA KENNEDY - NOTHING FANCY

Filmmaker Elizabeth Carroll examines the vibrant and unconventional life of Diana Kennedy, widely regarded as the world's leading expert on Mexican cuisine. 1 hour, 21 minutes. TC

GORDON LIGHTFOOT: IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND

An exploration into the career, music and influence of the iconic musician. With unprecedented access to the artist and featuring interviews with Sarah McLachlan, Alec Baldwin and more, this intimate documentary follows Lightfoot's evolution from choirboy in rural Canada to troubled troubadour to international star with hits including "If You Could Read My Mind", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", and "Rainy Day People." 1 hour, 30 minutes. JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY

Filmed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island and directed by world-renowned photographer Bert Stern, Jazz on a Summer's Day features intimate performances by an all-star line-up of musical legends including Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O'Day, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, and closes with a beautiful rendition of The Lord's Prayer by Mahalia Jackson at midnight to usher in Sunday morning. LUCKY GRANDMA

In the heart of New York's Chinatown, an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old Grandma (Tsai Chin) is eager to live life as an independent woman, despite the worry of her family. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma decides to head to the casino and goes all in, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck... suddenly attracting the attention of some local gangsters. Desperate to protect herself, Grandma employs the services of a bodyguard from a rival gang (Corey Ha) and soon finds herself right in the middle of a Chinatown gang war. 1 hour, 27 minutes. TC

MADE IN BANGLADESH

H&M, Walmart, and The Gap are among the retailers who source their clothes from Bangladesh, and factory owners there attempt to sell their goods cheaply by constantly cutting corners in safety and keeping salaries low. After a fire, a young garment worker named Shimu, over the objections of her husband, decides enough is enough and determines that a union is the only road open to better conditions. In Bengali with English subtitles. 1 hour, 35 minutes. VSR

NOMAD

Werner Herzog turns the camera on himself and his decades-long friendship with the late travel writer Bruce Chatwin, a kindred spirit whose quest for ecstatic truth carried him to all corners of the globe. Herzog's deeply personal portrait of Chatwin, illustrated with archival discoveries, film clips, and a mound of "brontosaurus skin," encompasses their shared interest in aboriginal cultures, ancient rituals, and the mysteries stitching together life on earth. 1 hour, 30 minutes. REBUILDING PARADISE

On the morning of Nov. 8, 2018, a devastating firestorm engulfed the picturesque city of Paradise, California. By the time the Camp Fire was extinguished, it had killed 85 people, displaced 50,000 residents and destroyed 95% of local structures. It was the deadliest U.S. fire in 100 years — and the worst ever in California's history. Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard's documentary is a study of of resilience in the face of tragedy, as a community ravaged by disaster comes together to recover what was lost and begin the important task of rebuilding. 1 hour, 31 minutes. SOMETIMES, ALWAYS, NEVER (PG-13)

Alan is a stylish tailor with moves as sharp as his suits. He has spent years searching tirelessly for his missing son Michael who stormed out over a game of Scrabble. With a body to identify and his family torn apart, Alan must repair the relationship with his youngest son Peter and solve the mystery of an online player who he thinks could be Michael, so he can finally move on and reunite his family. THE TOBACCONIST

Seventeen-year-old Franz journeys to Vienna to apprentice at a tobacco shop. There he meets Sigmund Freud (Bruno Ganz), a regular customer, and over time the two very different men form a singular friendship. When Franz falls desperately in love with the music-hall dancer Anezka, he seeks advice from the renowned psychoanalyst, who admits that the female sex is as big a mystery to him as it is to Franz. As political and social conditions in Austria dramatically worsen with the Nazis' arrival in Vienna, Franz, Freud, and Anezka are swept into the maelstrom of events.
