Washington annual town meeting preview
Where: Washington Town Hall, 8 Summit Hill Road
This year's annual town meeting will vote on 17 articles, including whether to impose a local room tax and enter into a 10-year-contract with a new recycling service. The town will also decide whether to purchase a gate to block off access to the Ashley Reservoir, where a 19-year-old was shot and nearly killed last year during an illegal gathering of teens in the area.
Room Tax: The town will vote on whether to impose a 6 percent room tax on all short-term rentals in town. The local excise tax would be paid by the guests at bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, lodging houses, Airbnbs or motels. In Massachusetts, there is a state room occupancy excise tax of 5.7 percent. Municipalities can also vote to impose their own tax of up to 6 percent.
