NORTH ADAMS — As the sun set on Monday, the eastbound lanes of Main Street remained closed due to a water main break.

Early Monday, the city notified residents that the road will be closed until further notice while repairs are completed. Highway Department crews were on scene throughout the day.

"Optimistically, they are hoping to have it fixed in 4 to 5 hours. Residents will have dirty water for some time afterwards once it's restored," North Adams Police Chief Jason Wood told The Eagle shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday.

The break impacted water pressure to the area around East Main Street, according to the emergency notification issued by the city about 10 a.m.

The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority service continued to operate, but its Main Street stop was accessed through the adjacent Steeple City Plaza parking lot.

The North Adams Police Department will advise residents when the street is reopened.
