Wayfair plans Oct. 10 grand opening for Pittsfield customer service center

PITTSFIELD Wayfair will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Pittsfield customer service center on Oct. 10, the company announced Monday.

The grand opening event will take place at 10 a.m. at Building 3 of the Clock Tower Business Center on South Church Street, which is where the facility is located.

Wayfair's CEO and co-founder Niraj Shah, who grew up in Pittsfield, will speak at the event along with local officials. The invitation-only event is not open to the public.

One of the world's largest online sellers of home goods, Boston-based Wayfair announced in December that it intended to open a customer service center in Pittsfield this year. The center is expected to employ 300 total workers by 2021, according to the company's application to the state's Economic Assistance Coordinating Council, which approved a tax-incentive package late last year that allowed the project to go forward.

According to that application, 188 employees are expected to be hired during the customer service center's first year of operation, with an additional 112 added in 2021. The initial class of sales and service consultants will consist of 25 to 30 employees, company officials said while conducting a hiring session at the MassHire Berkshire Career Center on North Street last month.

Wayfair's new facility will be located on three floors of the Clock Tower Business Center, in an area located between the Clock Tower Condominium complex and The Berkshire Eagle. The facility will include a reception area on the first floor, and work areas on all three floors.

Work on the new facility began during the spring, then picked up substantially over the summer. Wayfair began moving office furniture into its new facility two weeks ago, and electrical work is currently taking place. The customer service center's initial hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
